Trailer was invited once again to participate in a debate by Casco (Utrecht, NL) and Agency's (Bruxelles, BE) project The Grand Domestic Revolution.

One of Agency's previous debates that Trailer attended was concerning copyright in the cooking industry but this time it was dealing with childrens costumes. Agency, who's artistic practice consists, partly, of studying court cases filed this case under 'Thing 001062'. Besides Trailer, Agency invited a diverse group of related guests to “respond” on the witnessing of 'Thing 001062'. The discussion showed how countries use different strategies to protect intellectual property, and by doing so, creating a labyrinth of many complex rules, thus creating many gabs to escape the system.

BE) project The Grand Domestic Revolution.

Trailer was invited to participate in the debate of project The Grand Domestic Revolution, organized by Casco (Utrecht, NL) in cooperation with Agency (Bruxelles, BE).

Agency summoned things which speculate around the question: can chefs be considered as authors? Thing 000848 (Healthy Habit Cookbook) and Thing 000851 (Great Tasting Recipes) convene an assembly in order to bear witness. These things concern a controversy around the writing of cooking recipes. Agency invited a diverse group of concerned guests at ACU as the ‘translators’ for these things: ‘Bouillon Magazine’ editor Will Jansen, chef Dennis Steur, copyright researchers Tim Braakman and Marieke de Rooij (curatorial collective Trailer), Samir Allioui and Dirk Poot (Dutch Pirate Party) and others.

Trailer and the editors of Trailer Magazine #1 were invited by TAC (Eindhoven, NL) to give a presentation about the CopyClash exhibition at the No Budget Festival: Armut Macht Geil.

During the talk Trailer commented on Alex Kozinski's statement: ‘Overprotecting intellectual property is as harmful as underprotecting it.’ Ending with Nate Harrison's audio-recording Can I Get an Amen?, which explains the course of a six-second sample that spawned several entire subcultures which ended decades later by copyright barriers.

Trailer nam het citaat van Alex Kozinski als startpunt: "Overprotecting intellectueel property is as harmful as underprotecting it."

In the CopyClash exhibition, visitors will find works of art or popular culture that will highlight problems and new perspectives in intellectual property law. The exhibition is best described by a quote of Federal Courts' judgde Alex Kozinkski: ‘Overprotecting intellectual property is as harmful as underprotecting it.’

Exhibition
Our cultural innovation has always been guaranteed by building upon the works and ideas of others. Especially in our digital era many works are being barricaded by copyrights or other forms of intellectual property law. This endangers the nature of our cultural innovative ecosystem by eroding the cultural soil, essential for the growth of new cultures.

The works in CopyClash and the corresponding magazine show how cultural innovation is held back by the clashing borders of today’s intellectual property, copyrights, originality, authenticity and plagiarism.
In order to protect our cultural richness we are in need of new approaches that create a better balance between the availability of cultural goods and the reward or protection of it’s authors.

Research centre
All research material for CopyClash is collected and presented in the research centre at the exhibition space. Visitors can sit back and enjoy a selection of relevant films, books, texts, documentaries, essays and other related material.

Artists
Dennis de Bel (NL) & JODI (BE/NL), Ondrej Brody (CZ) & Kristofer Paetau (FI), Bea Correa (BR/NL), Peter Fischli (CH) & David Weiss (CH), Nate Harrison (US), Patrick Liddell (US), OkGO! (US), Evan Roth (US), Ad Schouten (NL), Wieden+Kennedy (US)

Opening & Release Trailer Magazine #1
During the opening of CopyClash, at Meent 125, Rot(t)terdam Roodkapje, Trailer will officially release the first issue of Trailer Magazine. This publication offers many other perspectives using relevant essays, interviews, columns, in depth stories about the artists and a lot more.

Bezoekers vinden in de tentoonstelling CopyClash kunstwerken of andere culturele uitingen die uitlichten welke problemen en nieuwe perspectieven bestaan rondom auteursrechten wetgeving. In de tentoonstelling wordt dit samengevat door een quote van rechter Alex Kozinkski van de Amerikaanse 'Federal Court': ‘Overprotecting intellectual property is as harmful as underprotecting it.’

Tentoonstelling

Kunstenaars
Dennis de Bel (NL) & JODI (BE/NL), Ondrej Brody (CZ) & Kristofer Paetau (FI), Bea Correa (BR/NL), Peter Fischli (CH) & David Weiss (CH), Nate Harrison (US), Patrick Liddell (US), OkGO! (US), Evan Roth (US), Ad Schouten (NL), Wieden+Kennedy (US)

Opening & lancering Trailer Magazine #1

Trailer was asked to come up with a shortened version of the Oplaad-Bioscoop-I program for Stukafest 2011. Trailer made a short compilation of youtube material combined with a supporting voice-over. The result was an informative yet entertaining movie on contemporary intellectual property law. It is addressing growing problems as well as showing some hilarious examples of the good and the bad sides of the current system.

Oplaad Bioscoop (Upload Cinema) is an event that is directly linked to the exhibition CopyClash. In the spirit of open source software it offers a film program that is arranged by the audience itself. By voting, the audience could choose a film program that best explains what's their opinion on copyright law. The result was a diverse range of short movies from the web on the topic of intellectual property.

The exhibition For Security Reasons investigates the balance between safety and playfulness and displays a critical point of view on the latest developments in security. The exhibited art shows where there is space for playfulness in a society where security measures are more or less inviolable.

In order to ensure our national security we have been introduced to camera surveillance, Civilian net, telephone taps, RFID-chip, alarm phase orange, preventive body-searches, vagabond-prevention-strips, coffeeshop free areas around schools, the behind-the-front-door policy, the Mosquito, the Taser, the public transport chip card, a ban on public gatherings and the zero-tolerance policy. We observe each other and every single suitcase due to the 'together against terrorism' campaigns.

For many people security measures are experienced as positive and effective. However well intended though, they limit our actions. The exhibition For Security Reasons investigates the balance between safety and playfulness and displays a critical point of view on the latest developments in security. The exhibited art shows where there is space for playfulness in a society where security measures are more or less inviolable.

Desiree Palmen escapes the all-seeing eye of a security camera whilst being perfectly visible to the public on the street. Harmen de Hoop interprets security as a space for playfulness and vice versa. Fabian Bechtle and Stefan Reuter show original graffiti in a compelling choreography. The gigantic work of art by Stylianos Schicho makes you shrink and offers an impression of the masses seen from the perspective of a security camera. The work of Jeroen Jongeleen seems to balance between playful mischief and urban criminality. By discarding the rules, he turns the city into an urban playground. The news of the future by Antoine Schmitt is on show 24/7 in the window of the showroom. SpY's 'invisible' intervention will take place outside the doors of showroom MAMA and Sander Veenhof will implement interactive technology to create invisibility in public space.

Artists:
Stylianos Schicho (AT), Jeroen Jongeleen (NL), SpY (ES), Harmen de Hoop (NL), Antoine Schmitt (FR), Desiree Palmen (NL), Fabian Bechtle / Stefan Reuter (DE), Sander Veenhof (NL)

Trailer was asked to organize the official opening party of the 10th edition of Festival De Wereld van Witte de With (2009) in collaboration with MAMA. It took place at Gay Palace, Rotterdam.

The opening party, Play, connected the overall festival theme 'Crossing borders!' to the exhibition For Security Reasons, which tried to redefine the balance between play, security, freedom and control. Without compromises the party Play served as a podium that stretched the edges of control. The audience was mostly overwhelmed by FCKNBSTRDS' performance. Totally absurd, half naked and assisted by live made chaotic noise, the anarchistic artist collective got the crowd along in jumping and rolling on the floor. Due to security measures the somewhat provocative performance had to be ended prematurely, however their statement was made clearly. They were followed up by a lovely playful set of Flipperkast (pinball machine) Soundsystem (NL) And the big name of the night, hardcore punk band Aux Raus, finally ended the night full of energy with their compelling technobeats.

Line-up:
AUXRAUS (NL), X-Ray (BE), Kypski (NL), Flipperkast soundsystem (NL), of FCKNBSTRDS (NL), Mikrobot (NL), Silna (NL), Pornologic (NL) and Funkie010 (NL)
